I visited a Tacoma yard and Olympia yard, lets start with some Tacoma highlights:
Alfa!
I’m tempted to take this but will wait till next weekend. If you need it, you better get it soon!
Not quite right
Very Clean car, had no parking sticker on it so I am hoping everything is good on it.
Fantastic seats!
Seats were in here
Absolutely nothing special about it
Fancy Mercedes phone
I pity the poor bastard who drove an old diesel van
The skeleton carpet belonged to this
V6 of course
And now for some Olympia highlights:
This is in a holding pen so it might be saved
Dirty Diesel VWs, pretty surprised to see them here
Sweet upswept exhaust bro!
Coffee was in here
What?, super hard to find in a junkyard!
I feel an intentionally rusted hood is an early sign a car is headed for junk status
Super little truck, had near perfect bench seat in it
Trofeo!
I had no idea Preludes dated back to the 70's
Only thing recycled from dirty VW’s

You laugh, but what coffee bean thief will think to look in the ashtray?

Lots of 80s iron much more interesting than the yards around here.

So, it is possible to safe cars from places like this? I’d love to save that MR2, even though it appears the engine is gone. Looks like a great candidate for an EcoBoost swap from a wrecked Focus ST.
In case you’re wondering why I thought of that, I’ll just say...I spotted a Foxbody Mustang at a car show with a 2JZ under the hood. Looked completely stock on the outside.
And seeing that MR2 makes me wanna do a Ford to Toyota swap in reverse of that Toyota to Ford swap.

If I had the money, I’d save as many of these interesting ones as possible. That would require winning the lottery or something, there wouldn’t be any way to make money doing that.

That would be a pretty awesome swap, most of these big yards won’t sell complete cars once they go through the gates.

I had no idea my coffee beans were in jeopardy!

Its getting less interesting every year unfortunately.

If the powertrain is out of that MR2, would they be willing to sell it as-is then? Because it looks pretty clear the engine is gone.

Other than the intact, running Phaeton we had in a local yard out here, most of the stuff in my local yards pales in comparison to some of the goodies you found.
I haven’t seen a VW Fox in years and still want one, wagon of course...

That’s because the PNW is practically a time capsule for cars. It might be easier on them than even the desert southwest (eats the interiors and rubber) due to the more temperate environment. Water is the only problem, should seals leak. It allows cars to be used much longer with rudimentary care than just about anywhere else.

So many of these make me ask WHY ARE THEY HERE they seem completely savable, but someone junked them...
I’ve not found anything interesting in any yards around here, all there is is piles of rust and mid-90's and newer sedans (except panther platform cars, which for some reason are impossible to find in junkyards here and play host to the only mid-90's and newer sedan parts I ever need).

I really want that 164, the jealously is real right now.

Gotta love the PNW, stuff like this still on the road every day. I saw a VW Fox on the road just the other day, today I have seen a Tempo, 190E, MGA.
Does that W123 have headlights from an early 80s Subaru? Weird.
Zoidberg will cry about that little Hilux.

I know many states have laws against salvage yards selling cars while especially once they have started the salvage process.

I doubt it, but it might be worth asking about. Lakewood, Wa Pick-N-Pill

Yep, its fantastic, but finding a mold free interior in a junkyard is a rarity
![]() 07/09/2017 at 19:22 |
|
It always confuses me, as a lot of these cars could be sold as projects or parts cars for a lot more than the junkyards give them

Its been one of my favorite things about WA since I moved out here. The variety of cars that people daily drive can’t be beat.

Wow, those are some cool shots! Some of those old little pickups were awesome and in pretty good shape, it looks like!

Yep, you see it even in the city. There’s a guy in my neighborhood who DDs a Volvo Amazon/122 wagon, and in the office where I work, someone DDs an 85 Camry - not exotic, but that’s an old timer now too.

That Blue Teal made me cry. Probably was an Si.
What’s that red thing between the 5 series and the first gen Prelude? Also my mother in law’s first car was one of those Preludes, she sold it and bought an Altimia because she couldn’t handle driving stick.

I’d bet. Once someone leaves a door open for a day or two of rain, it instantly starts molding...

The Apollo, the squarebody Chevys and Dodges, and the 75 ish Nova make me sad.

Took me a minute, but I think I figured it out. It’s an odor control thing, isn’t it?

Thats what I assumed too, It didn’t smell at all inside so maybe it works

they cut out the exhaust system and drain everything. It would be a big project to rebuild. I don’t think they resell whole cars once they are up for parts mostly because they can’t get it out until the whole row is being crushed ...and you couldn’t keep people from yanking parts if its on hold.
